the zidane incident (updated)

Monday, July 10th, 2006

maybe zidane did have a reason to kick Materazzi in the ass … not a good excuse but the video looks pretty interesting anyway

update: more evidence is emerging ;)

bar camp berlin 2006

Friday, June 30th, 2006

the first bar camp berlin will be held from Sep 30 to Oct 1. they call themselves an unconference: everyone can come, though the motto is ‘no audience, only participants’ - so everyone who wants to come has to give a talk or do something interesting - cool idea. i’ll be there, maybe talk about ruby or rails or xp … or … ajaxdsls … whatever. as long as it’s web 2.0 buzzword compliant ;)

streamlined for rails

Sunday, June 25th, 2006

streamlined is a soon-to-be-released ruby on rails extension. it aims at replacing rails’ integrated scaffolding generator with a much better CRUD application generation. i’m really looking forward to it as the controllers generated by rails are nice in the beginning but in 90% of the cases have to be replaced as they are just too simple and not usable for production, so i still keep spending way too much time on implementing these damn forms over and over again (sigh).

bumptop - desktop enhanced

Thursday, June 22nd, 2006

bumptop is a prototype implementation of a new computer desktop. instead of having a simple 2D screen with flat icons you can now 3D-rotate, resize and even pile up the icons in order to more easily and more powerfully sort and browse them. looks all really slick, there is also a pretty funny hip-hop version of the video available.

i think the approach has a couple of problems: it still uses icons instead of a preview of the actual contents (the video shows an example where actual pictures can be seen, though). how am i going to find the pdf i’m looking for in a pile of pdf icons that all look the same? also, it appears that there is no zooming or panning functionality. i have a couple of thousand of photos on my computer, are they all going to fit on this tiny desktop thing? from what i’ve seen i would say bumptop is a nice little enhancement to today’s desktop experience, but it’s far from what i hope to have as my future desktop one day.

maulfwurfshuegel

online banking 2.0

Thursday, May 18th, 2006

why hasn’t anyone implemented this?: a simple (maybe xml, or better yaml or …. ) data format for storing bank transfer instruction. i want the people on ebay that i buy stuff from send me a little text snippet that i can copy&paste into my online banking site. my bank can then parse it and present me with a filled out bank transfer form that i just have to confirm - instead of me copying every piece of information - account number, name, branch number, amount etc - into all those fields manually.

some banking IT person please read this and do it.
