the fluent interface pattern

Wednesday, April 5th, 2006

martin fowler recently presented a new pattern called the fluent interface. it is mostly useful for building objects in a more comfortable way than you normally would. here is an example i developed today. i had to build a large number of sql strings in java code and as that code smelled quite a bit i decided there had to be a better way than this:

dabble db

Tuesday, April 4th, 2006

ok, after all these pictures from the meat space let’s get back to real life, to IT ;)

i just discovered a screencast of dabble db, which is (going to be, not yet released) a web (2.0 of course :) ) based data base tool. it allows you to import data from spreadsheets (or enter them by hand) and then refactor everything into a real multi-table database model. of course everything is completely ajaxed.

some examples from the screencast:

  • you have a time range field in your spreadsheet. once you tell dabble that a column is a time range, you have access to a calendar like view, which presents all the rows in your table in a time line.
  • you have a couple of fields in your spreadsheet table that form, say, an address (first name, last name, street). you can now factor out these fields into a new address tabkle and dabble will automatically pull the data into that new table

slick! i wonder if there will be an API available, so other webapps can benefit from a reactorizable data base.
