the MP3 experiment 2.0

Tuesday, October 25th, 2005

improv everywhere, an improvisation group located in NYC, launched another of their MP3 events.

a couple of days before the event, people could download an mp3 file from the web site, being told to put it on their mp3 player and go to central park on a particular day and time - and not to listen to it in advance. the mp3 contained instructions on what to do once they heard a siren from some guy with a megaphone in the park. what happened? see yourself by …. watching the video and reading the article

Tuesday, October 18th, 2005

as the EFF has revealed now, color laser printers, by request of the U.S. secret service, mark every printout with the date of the print and the serial number of the device(!).

that way, secret service can track the origin of every prinout made.

the eff team had found tiny yellow dots on the pages and has now manged to decrypt those.

big brother is watching.

identity 2.0 presentation (great)

Friday, October 14th, 2005

dick hardt held a presentation about identity 2.0 at OSCON 2005 - how can people prove their identity on the internet in a better way than it’s done these days.

even if you are not interested in the topic at all, just watch it. the presentation style is just awesome. and apparently inspired by lawrence lessig, as he admits in the end.

Die Zeit unofficial Podcast

Thursday, October 13th, 2005

i got bored of work today, plus, i got the first issue of my ‘Die Zeit’ subscription today - well, there had to be something to do about it. there was :)

having a Zeit subscription also gives me access to the audio version of many articles on their web site - unfortunately, there is no podcast available so i could have the articles downloaded to my ipod automatically. well, there was none.

i spent the afternoon writing a little java app that searches the zeit.de site for new audio articles and presents the results as a podcast. it therefore runs a little web server on the local computer, so one can just point iTunes or whatever podcasting client at localhost and that’s it. of course, you still need a Zeit subscription or premium account to access the files. anyone who’s interested can download the little app including sources from here. feedback welcome.
